For two generations, the Fisher family has made customers at their Fisher & Sons Jewelers (5101 W. Esplanade Ave., Suite 1, Metairie, 885-4956) into friends by providing them with beautiful jewelry at a good value and treating them special.
"Our customers become our friends," says Chloe Fisher Bares, daughter of Thomas Fisher, who opened the business in 1946. "That is the major thing that we try to establish, not just a one-time sale."
Establishing trust, she says, has earned Fisher & Sons a wealth of new customers who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina from Lakeview and St. Bernard Parish. They have returned for the personalized service and quality jewelry.
Fisher & Sons also provides custom design services and original jewelry designs by Bares' brother, Craig Fisher, who will even custom-design wedding bands for engagement rings that have no match. The siblings do the buying for the store, focusing on jewelry with quality gemstones, semi-precious stones, pearls, sterling silver and gold, baby and wedding gift items, children's and baby jewelry, watches and men's jewelry.
"We try to satisfy all age groups and tastes," Bares says. "We try not to buy in quantity but to buy unique items that stand alone. That's what we strive for ... [designs that have] a traditional base ... with an edge to it."
Bares also handcrafts rosaries and bracelets of sterling silver and Swarovski Austrian crystals and restores old rosaries.
To help with the rebuilding of Angelo Brocato, the Sicilian bakery that started in 1905 and was flooded after Hurricane Katrina, Slow Food New Orleans is sponsoring "Cookies for a Cause" at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, at Savvy Gourmet (4519 Magazine St., 895-2665; www.savvygourmet.com). At that time, volunteers will bake traditional Sicilian Cuicidatti and Biscotti Regina cookies that will be shipped to Slow Food members across the country for donations to the Slow Food USA Terra Madre Relief Fund. The money raised by the cookies will be distributed to the Brocatos and other Louisiana food producers on March 21.
