Concert for the Cure

donated more than $575,000 to Susan G. Komen New Orleans during country musician Jason Aldean's eighth annual concert series Oct. 25. During the sold-out show at the New Orleans Arena, Aldean presented a check to the breast cancer research, treatment and awareness organization. Proceeds will support grants for breast cancer screening and education programs.


Lucy Dieckhaus,

a Loyola University New Orleans junior and news editor of university newspaper The Maroon, placed second in the nation among 10 college reporters during this month's National College Media Convention in New Orleans. She received the Story of the Year award from the Associated Collegiate Press for her coverage of Loyola's Student Government Association.


The Central Louisiana Community Foundation

awarded United Way of Central Louisiana its annual Community Impact Award to help fund a Family Justice Center for victims of domestic violence. The $55,000 grant will fund counseling, therapy and legal services. The foundation has awarded more than $350,000 since its inception in 2009.


Ronnie McMillian Jr.

pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court Oct. 9 to calling Gov. Bobby Jindal in September 2012 and leaving a voicemail saying Jindal should "get a bullet in [his] head." The 28-year-old New Jersey man regularly harassed public officials over the phone, according to prosecutors. He faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
