They get what they deserve

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation

awarded 184 Community Partnership Grants on Sept. 30. Grants totaling $361,865 were given to non-profit organizations that present festivals and other cultural events; artists documenting local culture; public schools providing music and art classes; and schools with after-school and summer educational arts programs. Since 1979, the foundation has donated more than $3 million.


St. Mary's Academy

band and marching unit will perform in The New York City Veterans Day Parade, the oldest and largest Veterans Day event in the U.S. The Nov. 11 parade features 20,000 participants, including veterans, active military members and others. The band has raised one-fifth of its $51,000 in travel costs.


Chris Kaufmann

was named a "Hidden Hero" by United Way of Southeast Louisiana and will receive the honor Oct. 18. Kaufmann is chief of administration for St. Tammany Fire Protection District 1 and a nine-year volunteer with United Way. Kaufmann also received a United Way Volunteer of the Year award in 2007.


Bravo TV and Grub Street

teamed up to sell Domilise's po-boys from a food truck in Manhattan Oct. 1. The Big Easy-to-Big Apple move was a promotion for the network's new show Top Chef: New Orleans, and part of the proceeds from every po-boy sold went to the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts.
