The Kenner Rotary Club

partnered with the Walmart Foundation to donate $5,000 in school supplies to Granville T. Woods Elementary School this month. Students and teachers received pens, paper and other classroom supplies. The Kenner Rotary Club holds annual school supply drives for Kenner schools.



self-described fans of New Orleans singer and NBC's The Voice contestant Terry McDermott, raised more than $4,500 for the ALS Association Louisiana-Mississippi Chapter in honor of McDermott's mother, who died of ALS, and McDermott's birthday on Aug. 6. McDermott recently concluded an international tour with his band The Bonfires.


Jerry Romig

announced on Aug. 13 that he would retire as public address announcer for the New Orleans Saints. Romig, 83, has served as the team's announcer since 1969, which was the team's third season. Earlier this year he received special honors from the Press Club of New Orleans for his 50 years of service, and in 2009 he received the Joe Gemelli Fleur de Lis award from the Saints Hall of Fame.


The City of New Orleans

did not properly manage $240 million in federal grants in 2012, according to audits released Aug. 7. Independent auditors Postlethwaite & Netterville and Bruno & Tervalon revealed inadequate tracking and dispersing methods for federal grant money awarded to more than a dozen city agencies. The city also spent $9 million more than it collected that year.
