French Quarter organizations
donated 12 patrol bicycles to the New Orleans Police Department's 1st and 8th districts. The French Quarter Business Association, the French Quarter Business Women's Association and the Kevin L. Wooldridge Foundation bought the high-end bikes, which have special headlights and sirens. The 1st and 8th districts cover the Quarter, Treme, the CBD, and parts of Mid-City and the Faubourg Marigny.
the longtime French Quarter photographer, was glowingly profiled in The New York Times on the eve of Oyeme con los Ojos (Hear Me With Your Eyes), her new show at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, which writer Penelope Green characterized as a "collision of magic realism, allegory and surrealism." Sacabo is also the wife of Gambit theater writer Dalt Wonk.
NOLA Goes Pink,
a group of 31 local restaurants, is offering $31 prix-fixe dinners this month in support of breast cancer awareness. Ten percent of all proceeds will go to the local affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Chefs have developed special healthy entrees for the occasion and will don pink coats for the cause. A list of participating restaurants is available at www.komenneworleans.org.
the city's former chief technology officer who pleaded guilty in federal court in December 2010 to accepting kickbacks, was on probation awaiting his Nov. 16 sentencing — until it was discovered he was arrested in August on suspicion of DWI. Worse, Jones didn't report the arrest to his probation officer as required by law, which means he's now on home detention until his sentencing.
