They get what they deserve

Amos Pierce,

an 84-year-old World War II veteran, finally received his war medals during a ceremony at the World War II Museum on Armed Forces Day. Pierce, an African American, had attempted to get his honors six decades earlier, but a white military clerk refused his claim. Pierce's son, actor Wendell Pierce, asked WWL-TV's "action reporter" Bill Capo to intervene. Capo contacted U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu's office, which investigated the matter and discovered Pierce was entitled to six medals, including a presidential unit citation.

Dr. J. Christian Winters,

professor and chairman of urology at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, has won the American Urological Association (AUA) Teaching Award for 2009. Winters was recognized for his efforts in reorganizing LSUHSC/Ochsner's urology residency program and enlarging LSUHSC's urology department after Hurricane Katrina. An AUA committee selected Winters from a nationwide field of candidates.

Sandra Bullock,

the noted film actress, is now an honorary member of the Warren Easton High School Hall of Fame. Bullock and her husband, custom motorcycle designer Jesse James, have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the school for numerous projects, including a scholarship fund, new band uniforms and renovating the school's auditorium. At the ceremony, Bullock surprised Arthur Hardy, a Warren Easton board member and local Mardi Gras expert, with a plaque that names the auditorium in his honor.

Nathaniel Dowl

was sentenced to 10 years in prison for filing false public records in an effort to lay claim to other people's properties. Dowl, who became a paralegal while in prison for forgery, filed bogus quitclaim deeds and forged tax sale documents so he could then use the filings to evict the real owners or their tenants. Barbara Dowl, a woman who claims to be Dowl's ex-wife, also allegedly used fake documents to collect $132,000 from the state's Road Home rebuilding fund. Her federal trial on fraud charges starts next month.
