Summersworth High School

in Summersworth, N.H., assigned students from its vocational/technical training program to build a house for a family in New Orleans. The students recently completed the new home and had it shipped to New Orleans, where it will be installed on property in the Hollygrove neighborhood. Funding for the house was provided through There's No Place Like Home, a project of the Jeanie C. Linders Fund, a nonprofit organization.

Better Than Ezra,

the nationally known local pop/rock band, raised more than $100,000 at its annual Ezra Open golf tournament. The money was used to support a number of organizations, including the Make It Right Foundation, Louisiana ArtWorks and the New Orleans Fire Department. On Dec. 30, at the band's annual concert at the House of Blues, New Orleans Fire Chief Charles Parent honored BTE with a plaque for its efforts and support of firefighters.

Norris Henderson,

the co-director of Safe Streets/Strong Communities, a local nonprofit focused on reforming the criminal justice system in the city, has been awarded the 33rd Benjamin E. Smith Award by the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana. The award recognizes an individual who demonstrates a commitment to civil liberties in the state. Henderson spent 27 years in Angola Prison on a murder conviction and, while there, became a self-taught paralegal, filing briefs on behalf of fellow inmates.

Gov. Bobby Jindal

garnered national praise last year for his executive order requiring cabinet members to file 2008 income reports by mid-January 2009, but he got less notice when he issued a second executive order — on Christmas Eve — giving them until May 15 to file the reports. Jindal claimed the four-month extension came in response to a new law setting the May deadline for other state officials, adding that the law trumps his executive order. Actually, he has total authority to order his Cabinet members to file early.
