In a city that takes pride in the go-cup and a region with drive-through daiquiri service, the ability to imbibe became even easier last week.
Drizly (www.drizly.com), a new alcohol delivery app and website, began service in New Orleans July 9. Wine, beer, liquor and a variety of mixers are available for purchase through the service, which promises delivery within an hour of ordering.
The business started in Boston and has expanded to 16 locations nationwide, and locally it is partnering with Brady's Wine Warehouse (1029 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd., 504-662-1488; www.bradys- winewarehouse.com) and Pearl Wine Co. (3700 Orleans Ave., Suite 1C, 504-483-6314; www.pearlwineco.com). Prices and liquor available will reflect those of the distributors, says co-founder and Vice President of Expansion Justin Robinson.
"People in New Orleans are now getting around to using technology-driven companies like Uber and we feel that it's certainly a market that is ripe for this — not just because it's a drinking culture, but because of the current demographics and a growing aptitude for technology," Robinson says.
Users can order online through the company's website or download the app for iPhone or Android devices. Once an account is set up, the nearest retailer's products will appear and users can add whatever they wish to their cart and check out online. There is a $2 delivery fee, and tipping the driver is encouraged, Robinson says.
Alcohol will be delivered until 11 p.m. daily and users also can send alcoholic gifts to friends and family of legal drinking age. To prevent delivery to under-age people, drivers will scan the purchaser's ID.
The service is available to residents in the French Quarter, Treme, the Garden District, Metairie, Mid-City, Gentilly, Audubon, Elmwood and Gretna. More locations may be added. Throughout July, users can enter the promo code NOLA15 and receive $15 off their first order.
