Fox Searchlight today released the first trailer for 12 Years a Slave, the New Orleans-shot film directed by Steve McQueen (Shame) and the great actor McQueen discovered several years ago, Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds). Due to begin limited national release on Oct. 18, 2013, 12 Years a Slave tells the true story of Simon Northup, a 19th-century free man of color who lived in New York and was kidnapped and sold into slavery in Louisiana. The film also marks the second film appearance by both Quvenzhané Wallis and Dwight Henry, stars of last year's indie smash hit Beasts of the Southern Wild. Henry is clearly visible in a couple of shots in the trailer.
For now, the the trailer is only available for viewing on iTunes. You can watch it here. Select 720p from the little pull-down menu to get a full-screen image. Like all McQueen/Fassbender movies, this one looks very, very good.
