Dominique’s on Magazine has opened, marking the second iteration of the restaurant from namesake chef Dominique Macquet.
With a craft cocktail program, a striking, contemporary dining room and an emphasis on produce grown not just locally but in some cases on premises, this new Dominique’s on Magazine shares a lot of the DNA of its forerunner. The cuisine is similar too. Signature dishes like beef tartare with tamari and ginger, sweetbreads with chimichurri, shrimp ceviche with Vietnamese herbs, scallops with fettuccine and Wagyu beef with Creole cream cheese stuffing were part of the program at the original Dominique’s on Magazine, and you’ll find them here too.
A native of Mauritius, a tiny island nation off the southeast coast of Africa, Macquet arrived in New Orleans in 1995 for a stint at the Bistro at Maison de Ville, a French Quarter restaurant which has since closed. In 1997 he opened his own restaurant, Dominique’s, inside the Maison Dupuy Hotel where he evolved a luxurious, often exotic, menu of global cuisine.
Macquet originally opened Dominique’s on Magazine in 2010 five blocks up the street, serving a creative interpretation of contemporary Creole cuisine. The restaurant quickly racked up rave reviews and national restaurant writer John Mariani named it among the nation’s best new restaurants in Esquire magazine and wrote a glowing profile of the place for Saveur magazine. But shortly after those accolades Macquet left the restaurant, citing a disagreement with his partner there, and he took his business name with him. That restaurant re-opened as Apolline with chef Matt Farmer at the helm.
The new Dominique’s on Magazine is a bigger restaurant. A former firehouse, it’s been redone with a soaring, open design inside and a courtyard with outdoor seating and a hydroponic herb and vegetable garden.
Dominique’s on Magazine will serve dinner Tuesday through Saturday, with Sunday brunch scheduled to begin March 17.
