In my article on the NOLA Motorsports Park in Avondale in this week's Gambit, I open with the experience I shared with track owner Laney Chouest as he lost control of a Nissan GTR and we hit the grass going 90 mph. It was a thrilling experience to say the least. Lest that story give you the wrong perception, I can assure you Chouest is a talented driver and the other four or five laps we did around the track went without incident.
That being said, Chouest (by his own admission) isn't nearly as talented driving at high speeds as the NOLA Motorsports track manager, Mitch Wright. A few weeks before my joy ride in the Nissan, Wright took me out in one of NOLA Motorsports five Ford Mustang FR500 racing cars. We put a camera on the front of the car to document the experience of going around the track at speed, sometimes reaching 160mph. As Wright put it, the camera mounted on the front end of the Mustang gives you "an incredible sensation of speed."
For anyone looking to experience going nearly three times the speed limit, NOLA Motorsports will be offereing "hot laps" in the Mustangs this weekend at the track's grand opening event. Take a look at the video and judge for yourself if it's worth the price of admission (spoiler: it is).
