Sacred Music Festival kicks off at New Orleans Healing Center



Seguenon Kone and Ivoire Spectacle (above) is among the performers at the inaugural Sacred Music Festival at the New Orleans Healing Center Saturday and Sunday nights. The event combines spiritual offerings from an array of religious practices, including a Hindu fire ceremony, Muslim call to prayer, Voodoo ceremony and Sacred Jewish and Sufi music. Musical performers range from African percussion to Sean Johnson and the Wild Lotus Band to a gospel singers.

The festival also features an altar welcoming all sorts of offerings and an art market.

Also this weekend, with similar musical programming is the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation's Congo Square New World Rhythms festival. Its programming draws on music from New Orleans, Africa, Brazil and the Caribbean. Performances take place in Congo Square in Louis Armstrong Park, and there also is a symposium about African and African-American art.
