It won’t be long now before Mardi Gras parade floats start making the grand turn from Napoleon Avenue on to St. Charles Avenue, and finally there’s now something at that corner more interesting than the shell of an abandoned Copeland’s restaurant.
Superior Seafood (4338 St. Charles Ave., 293-3474), an offshoot of the Superior Grill chain of Mexican restaurants, opens Tuesday at the prominent Uptown address.
The chef is Justin Ferguson and he has a large menu with a great many varieties of shellfish and fin fish, plus steaks, pastas, entrée salads and a few sandwiches. It's the first restaurant of its kind for its parent company, which runs Mexican restaurants in Louisiana and Alabama.
The building had for years been a Copeland’s, but that restaurant never reopened after Hurricane Katrina and the site sat idle until the Superior Seafood plan was first announced back in 2009.
The property went through a top-to-bottom renovation, and it now sports a large zinc bar, vintage pressed ceilings, copious natural wood and an oyster bar. New patio areas flanking St. Charles and Napoleon avenues can be enclosed and climate-controlled as the weather dictates, in the style of Superior Grill about half mile away, and there’s a balcony that will be used for Mardi Gras parades.
A section of the menu devoted to oysters features them raw, grilled, baked or wrapped with bacon and fried. Other appetizers range from shrimp remoulade and marinated crab claws to escargot and beef carpaccio (a spinach and artichoke dip made it on there as well). Entrees include BBQ shrimp, mussels and frites, shrimp and andouille bruschetta, redfish Creole, a blackened drum Napoleon and seared flounder. Most appetizers are between $9 and $12 while the seafood entrees range from $16 to $28.
There’s a daily happy hour from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. with drink deals, and a second late-night happy hour Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 p.m. until closing.
Superior Seafood will initially open for dinner only, beginning at 4 p.m. Its normal schedule will include lunch and dinner daily.
