The fog was rolling in so densely in the French Quarter last night that we didn't notice the new sign on Decatur Street until we were standing just beneath it. But looking up we instantly recognized an old name from the recent past.
The dance club Rubyfruit Jungle is back after a hiatus of about eight years, taking over the space at 1135 Decatur St. that had previously been the Whirling Dervish. For many years the club had been a fixture on Frenchmen Street, at the address where Marigny Brasserie is now.
"Rubyfruit Jungle" is an allusion to the novel of the same name by Rita Mae Brown (among other things), and also a dead giveaway that this is first and foremost a lesbian club. As most alt-lifestyle clubs assert, however, you'll see all types here.
The club reopened Dec. 5. It has three levels, a dance floor, pool tables and a private lounge on the third floor. A balcony is expected to be complete in time for the Feb. 7 roll of Krewe du Vieux.
Rubyfruit Jungle hosts a "Sexy Bitch" drag queen show each Sunday beginning at 7 p.m. that we're told is quite something.
