Blakeview: The 1850 House reopens

Summer brings a reminder that this is the perfect time to play tourist in your hometown. The 1850 House, a French Quarter attraction that recently reopened after extensive renovations, may be a spot you haven't visited. Located at 523 St. Ann St. in one of the Lower Pontalba apartments, the attraction has been closed for nine months for mold remediation. The home features hundreds of antebellum antiques and pieces of artwork and is designed to replicate daily life in 1850 when the Baroness Micaela Almonester de Pontalba designed and built the Upper and Lower Pontalba Buildings, which flank Jackson Square. In 1921, the Pontalba family sold the Lower Pontalba to philanthropist William Ratcliffe Irby, who later donated it to the Louisiana State Museum. As part of the recent renovation, curators added interpretive panels detailing the life of Pontalba, urban slavery and indentured servitude.
