New Orleans Trivia

Blakeview: Syndey Byrd

comment

If a picture is worth a thousand words, I hope you'll allow me a few to remember a woman whose work told the stories of New Orleans, in particular those of its music and Mardi Gras: prolific photographer Syndey Byrd.

Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Byrd moved to New Orleans in 1972 and found the photography subjects she had been looking for. She traveled the world and won awards for her photographs, which were exhibited in museums. This time of year, she would be a regular at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, with cameras draped around her neck, snapping thousands of photos of the musicians and the event. Though she died in October, Byrd's body of work remains a treasured chronicle of the city and culture she loved.
