Second Line Stages, the only LEED Silver-certified studio in the U.S., has partnered with Golden Leaf Energy to offer biodiesel fuel to the area's film industry projects. The locally produced fuel (a used cooking oil byproduct) will be available from the warehouse studios at 800 Richard St., or for delivery to sets shooting on location in the New Orleans metro area and in Baton Rouge.
Diane Wheeler-Nicholson, Second Line's sustainability director, says in 2010, Louisiana's film industry generated more than $450 million in state revenue, with more than $300 million coming from New Orleans. Fuel, she says, is one of production crews' biggest expenses, and Second Line, in keeping with its green image, will offer the fuel to promote its sustainability efforts. Louisiana movie set haulers Hollywood Trucks also has committed to biodiesel for its fleet of diesel vehicles.
The biodiesel (rated B5) reduces carbon emissions by up to 5 percent. It is regulated by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
