Brew Dogs talks to Gambit about New Orleans' craft beer scene



In April, brewers James Watt and Martin Dickie came to New Orleans to shoot an episode of Brew Dogs. Now in its second season, the show features the Scottish duo visiting American cities to explore their beer cultures and team up with local breweries to create a beer that represents each city. The New Orleans episode airs this summer on the Esquire Network. Watt spoke with Gambit about his experiences filming here.

What were your impressions of the local craft beer scene?

Watt: I loved the city so much: such amazing energy, killer music scene and by far the best food culture of anywhere in America. The craft beer scene is just about to kick off in style in New Orleans. It is a little bit behind some of the pioneering cities and states in the U.S., but there are plenty of signs that pretty great things are going to be happening soon in New Orleans for beer.

Where did you eat and did you get the chance to hear any live music while you were here?

W: Yes – loved Frenchmen Street – we caught some epic jazz whilst drinking great craft beers at d.b.a. And Cochon Butcher is just amazing.

What was the weirdest/ craziest thing you experienced while filming this episode?

W: Zipping over a gator-infested swamp in an airboat whilst brewing beer. Oh, and eating the marvel that is Tator Tots for the first time. I think they tasted all the better for the fact it was 3 in the morning and I had a double IPA in my hand at the time.

What was your favorite Louisiana beer?

W: I loved NOLA Hopitoulas IPA.
