What to expect in the beer scene of 2014


Last week, I looked at how much happened in Louisiana's craft beer scene in 2013. This week, we look ahead to 2014.

 In Arabi, 40 Arpent is putting the finishing touches on its brewery conversion, which was delayed by the federal government shutdown in October. A New Year's tweet from the company promised a release date "ANY day now." In the Lower Garden District, Courtyard Brewing has neighborhood support to open its nano brewery and tap room.

  Gnarly Barley Brewing Co. ( in Hammond plans to launch after Mardi Gras and will release Catahoula Common, Radical Rye PA and Korova Milk Porter. Thibodaux's Mudbug Brewery reports construction on its brewhouse has resumed following permit delays, and it hopes to open in the first half of 2014.

  Cajun Fire Brewing Company's Jon Renthrope says the New Orleans-based brewery-in-dvelopment has been working with the Idea Village IDEAxcelerator program and is close to locking down a location and beginning the process of becoming a fully licensed brewery.

  Second Line Brewing is on the horizon; New Orleans natives Karen and Mark Logan will move home in 2014 after three years in Anchorage, Alaska and plan to start production at the new brewery in January 2015. Rougarou Brew Co. is seeking a head brewer and could open in New Orleans. La Brasserie is in initial planning stages but hopes to collaborate with Courtyard.

  NOLA Brewing ( will release a pale ale in spring, and its New Belgium collaboration, Black Strap Chicory Stout, will be released in January. Bayou Teche ( will collaborate this year with two breweries overseas, La Bambelle in France and Brewery L'Echasse in Belgium.

  Newly opened Great Raft brewery ( in Shreveport hopes to capitalize on the immediate success of its tap room by offering brewery tours. Great Raft also will begin canning beer, which will hit New Orleans shelves by Mardi Gras. Red River continues to expand its brewing capacity and distribution outlets in Shreveport. — NORA MCGUNNIGLE
