During American Craft Beer Week (ACBW), May 15-21, breweries across the country hold events celebrating craft beer. Here are events featuring new releases at breweries in the New Orleans area.
NOLA Brewing Company NOLA Brewing Company (3001 Tchoupitoulas St., 504-896-9996) releases its new IPA, Syncopation, at a series of events. Syncopation is brewed with a blend of Citra, Mosaic, Grungeist, Calypso and Ekuanot hops. The beer has a fruity aroma but finishes with all hop flavor. It's 6 percent alcohol by volume (ABV).
The official release is Monday, May 15 at The Avenue Pub (1732 St Charles Ave., 504-586-9243; www.theavenuepub.com). Syncopation is highlighted at Bayou Beer Garden (326 N. Jefferson Davis Parkway, 504-302-9357; www.bayoubeergarden.com) on Tuesday, May 16; at Cooter Brown's Tavern (509 S. Carrollton Ave., 504-866-9104; www.cooterbrowns.com) Wednesday, May 17; at The Barley Oak (2101 Lakeshore Drive, Mandeville, 985-727-7420; www.thebarleyoak.com) Thursday, May 18; and at Mid City Yacht Club (440 S. St. Patrick St., 504-483-2517; www.midcityyachtclub.com) Friday, May 19.
Other NOLA Brewing beers being served during ACBW include double dry-hopped Hurricane Saison with Mosaic hops, Galaxy dry-hopped Lowerline and Rubix Cubism, which is blended to create a lightly sour beer reminiscent of a tart East Coast IPA.
Wayward Owl Brewing Company (3940 Thalia St., 504-827-1646; www.waywardowlbrewing.com) taps a one time-only batch of My Funky Family in its tasting room on Tuesday, May 16. It's a version of flagship beer Family Tree Kristallweisen with a secondary brettanomyces fermentation in barrels with Louisiana strawberries.
Urban South Brewery (1645 Tchoupitoulas St., 504-267-4852; www.urbansouth.com) rereleases Modillion double dry-hopped IPA and also will distribute it to the Northshore and Baton Rouge.
Brieux Carre Brewing Company (2115 Decatur St, 504-304-4242; www.brieuxcarre.com) releases three new IPAs on Monday, May 15: HopsSpine Throwback West Coast IPA, StarHazer double dry-hopped IPA with Apollo, Galaxy and Challenger hops, and 8x Dry-Hopped Falcon Warrior IIPA.
On Big Beer Release Day, Friday, May 19, it issues two beers. Pomeranian Fight Club is a 9 percent ABV imperial saison brewed with lavender, rose hips and hibiscus. Bagpipes at Midnight Scottish Wee Heavy is a big brother to the brewery's Scotch Ale, Bagpipes at Noon.
Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant (200 Poydras St., 504-552-2739; www.gordonbiersch.com) releases a new hazy double IPA featuring Citra and Mosaic Cryo hop dust from YCH Hops on Monday, May 15. A barrel-aged stout, aged one year in a Buffalo Trace bourbon barrel, will be released Wednesday, May 17.
Gnarly Barley Brewing Company (1709 Corbin Road, Hammond, 985-318-0723; www.gnarlybeer.com) releases its new flagship beer, Jucifer IPA, at its anniversary party at the brewery on Saturday, May 13. It will be available in Hammond, New Orleans, Jefferson, Mandeville, Covington and Baton Rouge on Monday, May 15.
Great Raft's (www.greatraftbrewing.com) created a new recipe for Southern Drawl pilsner. The new brew will be previewed, along with a Belgian-style pale ale created with Washington, D.C., brewery DC Brau, at The Avenue Pub Friday, May 18.
Tin Roof Brewing Company (www.tinroofbeer.com) has reformulated its Voodoo pale ale, and it will be available throughout the area on May 15. The new Voodoo is a heavily dry-hopped American pale ale, and oats are used to enhance tropical and fruit flavors provided by the Citra, Simcoe and Waimea hops.
