Am I eligible to donate blood?

In order to donate, you must weight at least 110 pounds and be healthy. The Blood Bank at East Jefferson General Hospital accepts donors 17 years of age an older. One can donate blood every 8 weeks and platelets every 2 weeks. Donating blood is safe and only takes about 30 minutes. You may donate blood every 56 days or six times a year and must have proper identification.

People with a history of high blood pressure and diabetes can donate, if controlled by medication, diet or exercise. Most medications are acceptable. You cannot donate if you are pregnant or have given birth within the past six weeks. You must feel well and have no history of hepatitis past the age of 10.

For your convenience, the donor room is open from 8 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. It is also open by appointment from 8 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The donor room is closed on Sundays and major holidays. You can either make an appointment or stop by the EJGH Blood Bank. The staff will make every effort to accommodate you as quickly as possible.
