6 Tips to Help You Quit Smoking

1. Talk with your doctor about prescription medications and over-the-counter cessation aids.

2. Make a plan, including marking a quit date on your calendar weeks in advance, then stick to it.

3. Exercise every day, even if it is just walking, to reduce the stress of quitting, improve energy and mood levels and combat weight gain.

4. Drink lots of water, eat a balanced diet and get plenty of sleep.

5. Establish a group among family and friends who can walk with you or listen when you need support.

6. Seek outside resources such as stop-smoking programs in the community or online. The American Lung Association offers Freedom From Smoking (www.ffsonline.org and www.lungusa.org) and the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-free Living offers classes and online support through Quit With Us, LA (www.quitwithusla.org). Louisiana's Department of Health and Hospitals also has a hotline for smokers who want to quit at (800) QUIT-NOW.

Most of these tips are courtesy of the American Lung Association.
