Recent New Orleans resident Benjamin Booker released his debut self-titled album on ATO Records in August. In his interview with Gambit, Booker said he fell in love with turn-of-the-century blues and Southern soul with the aid of WWOZ-FM, and his lo-fi punk rock songwriting got a boost from his new New Orleans bonafides. Breakout track "Have You Seen My Son?" — which created buzz when an early bathroom-recorded version was passed around music blogs — was "still the most representative song of what I want to do," he told Gambit in August. "That mixture of punk and gospel and R&B and all these things I grew up listen-ing to."
Booker grew up in Florida, home of sweat-stained punk festival The Fest — a far cry from where he landed this year, with a record deal and touring dates with Jack White. Booker's bluesy, throaty howl and permanently fuzzed-out guitar partners with drummer Max Norton and bassist Alex Spoto. This Voodoo Music + Arts Experience headlining slot is the trio's first New Orleans show following Booker's critically acclaimed debut.
