This red blend from Spain's Navarra region is a sensational bargain and surprisingly mature for its age. Considered one of the country's most significant wine producing zones, Navarra is separated from France by the Pyrenees, and vineyards thrive on the range's lower slopes. The area's moderate temperatures and climate are influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, which are instrumental in creating the concentrated fruit flavors typical of the region. Produced by Bodega Pagos de Araiz, the wine is comprised of 81 percent tempranillo, 9 percent garnacha, 8 percent merlot and 2 percent cabernet sauvignon. In the glass, the wine offers aromas of dark berries, touches of oak and lavender and herbal notes. On the palate, taste cherry, plum and red currants with a hint of dried orange peel and spice. Good acidity assures a lingering finish. Open 20 minutes before serving. Drink it with smoked or cured meats, glazed ham, veal or pork roast, beef brisket, lasagna, pizza and burgers.
