Germany's Rhineland is recognized as the birthplace and spiritual home of the riesling grape. Austria and Alsace also are known for producing wines with it, but other regions are gaining attention, including New York's Finger Lakes. Konstantin Frank emigrated to the area in the 1950s from Ukraine. Eventually, he opened the Vinifera Wine Cellars winery and planted pinot noir in a 9-acre vineyard on a hillside bluff overlooking Keuka Lake. His wines garnered praise, and he has been singled out as the catalyst for New York's wine industry's current success. This well-balanced wine offers aromas of tart green apples, nectarine and lime zest. On the palate, taste stone fruit, flinty notes, grapefruit and characteristic minerality. Drink it with butternut squash soup, white-fleshed fish, mussels with french fries, and Chinese and Thai cuisines. Buy it at: Pearl Wine Company. Drink it at: Loa.
