2010 Fontanafredda Briccotondo Barbera

Piedmont, Italy

$11-$15 Retail

This versatile wine is a great introduction to barbera, with its red and dark fruits, characteristic freshness and bright acidity. A portion of the wine ages in new French oak barrels, and the remainder rests for 5 months in large Slovenian casks before bottling. The medium-bodied wine offers aromas of plum, blackberry and both savory and sweet spice. On the palate, taste red and black cherries, black raspberries and smooth tannins. Drink it with pasta dishes, risotto, roast beef, cured meats, grilled sausages, pizza and Italian cheeses. Buy it at: Swirl Wines, Elio's Wine Warehouse, Schiro's Deli & Bar, Vine and Dine and Acquistapace's Covington Supermarket. Drink it at: Commander's Palace and Ceasar's Italian Restaurant in Mandeville. — BRENDA MAITLAND
