2009 Man Vineyards Chenin Blanc

Paarl, South Africa / $8-$10 Retail

Originally cultivated in France's Loire Valley, Chenin Blanc is one of the most adaptable white grapes, now used in still, sparkling and sweet wines in many regions. This crisp and lively bottling from South Africa is an excellent value and exhibits alluring scents of tropical fruits, melon, mango, peach and spice and mineral notes. After an initial hint of sweetness, tart and tangy flavors of pear, green apple and hints of grapefruit hit the palate. It's good as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to salads, grilled chicken, fish, shellfish and many Asian cuisines. Buy it at: Whole Foods Markets, Swirl Wines and Martin Wine Cellars. Drink it at: MiLa and Orleans Grapevine. — Brenda Maitland
