2007 Vina San Esteban Malbec Reserve

Mendoza, Argentina / $10 Retail

As Cabernet Sauvignon lovers discover Argentine Malbecs, Cabs and blends, many become fans of the region's outstanding combination of high quality and low prices. Noted for fine Chilean wines, the Esteban family sources a blend of 95 percent Malbec and 5 percent Bonarda (believed to have originated in France) grapes from hillside regions high in the Argentine Andes for this wine. It was fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve varietal character. On the palate, the full-bodied wine exhibits bright fruit including dark currants and black cherries and smooth tannins on the long, pleasant finish. It's best decanted and is a good match with grilled meats, hearty stews, roasts and pasta dishes. Buy it at: Dorignac's. Drink it at: Mayas and Stein's Deli & Market. — Brenda Maitland
