2007 El Castro de Valtuille Mencia Joven

Bierzo, Spain / $13-$16 Retail

This wine is made in the province of Castilla y Leon by Bodega Castro Ventosa, a 250-year-old estate in northwestern Spain that boasts 100-year-old vineyards. This bottling of 100 percent indigenous Mencia grapes, however, is sourced from 20- to 40-year-old vines. The medium-bodied wine offers aromas of red and black fruit with oak and earth notes, a dried herbal character and some minerality. It has concentrated flavors of black cherry, plum, currant and raspberry tinged with allspice and black pepper. Drink it with grilled meats, cheeses, stews and roasts. Buy it at: Cork & Bottle, Wine Seller, Acquistapace's Covington Supermarket and Habano's Wine Cellar of Slidell. Drink it at: Cafe Atchafalaya, Commander's Palace, Vega Tapas Cafe, Bistro de la Reine and Obelisk Wine Bar. — Brenda Maitland
