2007 Diseno Malbec

Mendoza, Argentina / $11-$13 Retail

A high-quality, bargain Malbec from Argentina's prime Mendoza region, Deseno sources its grapes from high altitude vineyards in the foothills of the Andes. Robust and richly flavored, this medium-bodied wine offers bouquets of black cherry, floral notes and blueberry with spice, oak and a hint of tobacco. On the palate, blackberry, raspberry, licorice and cocoa mingle with earth notes through to a lingering finish. It's a fine accompaniment to barbecue, braised short ribs, grilled or roasted meats, chili, hearty stews, casserole dishes, burgers and hard cheeses. Buy it at: Elio's Wine Warehouse, W.I.N.O., Dorignac's and Breaux Mart in Metairie. Drink it at: W.I.N.O., Rock-N-Sake and New City Grille. — Brenda Maitland
