2006 Lorca Poetico Malbec

Mendoza, Argentina / $21-$22 Retail

An exceptional wine from a top-notch producer in Mendoza's Uco Valley, Poetico is a blend of 90 percent Malbec, 7 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 3 percent Syrah. The full-bodied wine was aged in 90 percent new French oak and 10 percent new American oak for a year before bottling. A swirl of the glass reveals complex aromas of dark berries and spice with hints of pepper, vanilla and a subtle, earthy component. On the palate, expect flavors of ripe red and black fruit, cassis, chocolate and espresso, firm, even tannins and good acidity leading into a lengthy finish. Drink it with braised short ribs, rare beef, grilled chops and wild game. Buy it at: Rouses in Uptown. Drink it at: Stella! and La Boca. — Brenda Maitland
