2005 Convento Oreja Roble

Ribera del Duero, Spain / $20 Retail

Spain has more acres devoted to vines than any other country, yet many high-quality and good-value wines are not well known here. This 100 percent Tempranillo discovery ages in a combination of French and American oak. In the glass, aromas of bright black fruit and red berries are joined by hints of tobacco, coffee and leather. On the palate, taste cassis and plum flavors, spice notes and a pleasing minerality. Decant for best results. It's a delightful accompaniment to tapas, barbecued and roasted meats, burgers and wild game. Buy it at: Swirl Wines. Drink it at: Rambla, Delachaise and Dakota. — Brenda Maitland
