Sexy Dex and The Fresh evolved from Dexter Gilmore's excellent future R&B bedroom project and its incredibly addictive slices of lo-fi pop. On his full band's latest single "Speed Racer," Gilmore's wild guitar and falsetto dance with wobbly synths and bubbly guitars, all unmistakably channeling a juicy Dirty Mind- and Controversy-era Prince and his punky, cosmic rock 'n' roll. The hook's staccato keyboard attack and squiggly synth riffs and liquid bass blast through four perfect minutes of funk.
The band premiered the song's delirious, psychedelic VHS fuzz-covered video collage via Flood earlier his month. Its next local show is Saturday, July 23 at Saturn Bar with Tomato Dodgers and U.S. Nero. Admission $5.
