Members of Prince's band The New Power Generation will join a tribute to the late artist to close out the 2016 Essence Festival on Sunday, July 3.
Sly and the Family Stone bassist Larry Graham also joins the tribute, along with Marsha Ambrosius, Kelly Price, D-Nice and Doug E. Fresh and New Orleans artists Luke James and the Stooges Brass Band and players from The Roots of Music. A second line in Prince's honor will follow the performance.
The New Power Generation made its live debut with Prince in 1990 followed by its appearance on 1991's Diamonds and Pearls
and 1992's Love Symbol.
The band also appeared on his final studio album, 2015's HitNRun Phase Two.
Prince was one of the festival's most famous fans, and his 2004 and 2014 headlining performances were among the festival's best. His proteges and devotees are all over this year's bill
, including Judith Hill, who recently spoke to The New York Times
about working with Prince at his Paisley Park studio before his death in April.
Hundreds of New Orleanians celebrated Prince following his death with a second line and block party in Treme.
