Sandwich and milkshake shop The Milk Bar
will close its Delachaise Street location (1545 Delachaise St.) on May 27.
Australian owner Inta Phayer and her husband Kevin opened the spot near Touro Infirmary seven years ago, after Hurricane Katrina and the federal floods forced the couple to shutter their flagship restaurant near Charity Hospital, which had been open since the 1990s.
The shop, known for towering ciabatta sandwiches stuffed high with creative fillings, fresh fruit smoothies and giant milkshakes, built a following in the years to come, and the couple opened a second location on Carrollton Avenue in the Riverbend in 2012.
Business near the Touro spot slowed lately, Inta Phayer said, prompting the couple to pull the plug.
“We’ve just decided to close this location, but we’re looking at some other spots,” she said, adding that the couple is eyeing a possible locations in the Central Business District.
No changes are afoot at the Riverbend location
(710 S. Carrollton Ave., 504-309-3310), which is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
