Guitarist Warren Haynes leads the all-star tribute to The Last Waltz.
The Band played a historic final concert in San Francisco in 1976 called The Last Waltz featuring an array of guests, including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Muddy Waters and Dr. John — and the show featured horn arrangements by Allen Toussaint. The concert was filmed by Martin Scorsese and released as a documentary.
A tribute to that show
featuring an all-star lineup is scheduled for April 30 at the Saenger Theatre
. Performers include Warren Haynes, Don Was, John Medeski, Jamey Johnson, George Porter Jr., Dave Malone, Terence Higgins, and others. The band will use Toussaint's concert arrangements.
There have been previous tribute concerts to The Last Waltz, including an annual local concert organized by Little Maker and featuring dozens of performers, recently held at One Eyed Jacks in January.
Such all-star tributes have become annual events during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and recent years have featured a Dr. John tribute
orchestrated by Was and a Neville Brothers tribute
Tickets to the April Last Waltz tribute go on sale Friday, March 25.
