  • On Monday (Feb. 22), El Paso Mexican Grill opened a Metairie location at 601 Veterans Memorial Boulevard.

Louisiana Tex-Mex chain El Paso Mexican Grill opened Monday in Metairie.

The newest addition to the statewide franchise opened at 601 Veterans Memorial Blvd. in the former SOHO Asian Cuisine spot. Renovations to the restaurant include a large wraparound bar and the addition of patio seating.

According to a press release from the company, which operates 15 locations in Louisiana and Florida, including one in Algiers, the Metairie spot “will appeal to residents looking for a more urban experience without actually venturing all the way into Orleans parish.”

Guests can expect a familiar array of Tex-Mex fare, such as bowls of queso, guacamole prepared tableside, quesadillas, nachos, burritos, tacos and fajitas, among other dishes. There is a full bar including frozen margaritas.

For sports fans, there are 16 flat-screen televisions, and the owners say live music events and drink specials will highlight the opening.

The restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner. For more information, visit the website, here.

• Chef Kristen Essig’s latest project Cavan (3607 Magazine St., 504-509-7655) is now open.

The new restaurant from the team behind Sylvain, Meauxbar and Barrel Proof opened Feb. 19 inside the Lower Garden District two-story Victorian home known as the Cockerton House.

The menu, from Essig and sous chef Ben Thibodeaux, is inspired by the ingredients and dishes found across American coastal areas, so diners can expect a seafood-heavy menu accented with Southern touches. Fried oyster toasts are topped with kimchee and ginger remoulade; cold poached seafood salad features radishes and preserved lemon; and barbecue jerk shrimp are served with mango chow chow and coconut rice.

Bar snacks include hushpuppies with whipped lardo, Old Bay fries with malt aioli and peel-and-eat shrimp. For dessert, there’s maple banana pudding and a pina colada ice cream sandwich.

Cavan is open daily at 4 p.m. for drinks and 5 p.m. for dinner.
