Cocktails pairing Italian amaros and chocolate are the highlight of a pop-up event Tuesday (Feb. 16) at Bellocq.
Pairing the herbaceous Italian liqueur amaro with the bittersweet flavors of chocolate might not be the first combination that comes to mind when mixing drinks, but for Bellocq
bartender Brian Kientz, it was a natural fit.
The pairing will be highlighted Tuesday (Feb. 16), when Kientz launches the first in a series of cocktail-related pop-up events at the St. Charles Avenue craft cocktail bar, which sits at the bottom of the Hotel Modern (936 St. Charles Ave., 504-962-0911).
Kientz says he was inspired after reading about the Italian tradition of pairing a piece of chocolate with an amaro in the late afternoon. “(The) combination of flavors really stuck with me,” Kientz says. “(It’s) such a natural combination – bittersweet chocolate and a bitter amaro.”
Cocktails at Tuesday's event include the Hannah’s Smoking Jacket, made with George Dickel rye whiskey, homemade chocolate syrup, Cynar and a Perique tobacco smoke garnish. The Jumping the Bed features homemade crème de cacao, Campari, lime juice and soda. The Chocolate City drink is a spin on a chocolate martini, made with Bols Barrel Aged Genever, Bittermens Amere Sauvage, Averna amaro and Hershey’s chocolate syrup.
Featured drinks will be priced similar to the bar’s regular menu (which will still be on offer during the event), ranging from $8 to $14.
Tuesday’s event runs from 8 p.m. to midnight. Future events in the series will take place the third Tuesday of every month. The details of next month’s theme are still being finalized, but there’s a good chance guests can expect frozen interpretations of classic 20th-century cocktails, Kientz says.
