In weeklong run that begins tonight, Feb. 12, Zeitgeist Films presents a film from the African nation of Niger that reimagines Prince's 1984 career-making film Purple Rain as Rain the Color of Blue with a Little Red in It. So titled because there's no word for "purple" in Tamajeq, the language spoken by the nomadic Tuareg people of Western Africa, the film transposes the personal and career struggles of Prince's Purple Rain character to the blues-based, guitar-heavy music scene of the Tuareg. Real-world exponents of this style include the internationally admired band Tinariwen and singer-songwriter-guitarist Bombino, who has performed to adoring crowds at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival's Blues Tent. The film screens nightly at 8 p.m. More info here. Check out the trailer below.
