Following his massive hit "Let Me Find Out," bounce artist 5th Ward Weebie, as promised, hit back with a sequel. After the "Let Me Find Out" saga — among Weebie's 20 years of New Orleans bounce, building on its "Triggaman" foundation with his signature style and humor, on the radio and the parade route — Weebie partnered with a seemingly unlikely group to make something he wants blasting beyond Mardi Gras.
On his latest, Weebie performs with rising New Orleans outfit New Breed Brass Band and, in the producer's chair, Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews. "Watcha Workin It Fa" merges second line brass, jazz riffs and jubilant horns with Weebie's raps, bounce chants and calls and responses.
“No bounce artist has done a record like this," Weebie tells Gambit, "with a brass band to infuse into live second line jazz with bounce. ... I want to say it’s the first of its kind, making history. We collided worlds and this is what you get."
Shorty invited Weebie to work on the single last year, dropping it as an instant Carnival hit. "Shorty called — 'I got this record I’m writing for New Breed, I want you to be on it," he says. "I heard the idea and saw where they’re coming from. It was all right, but once I started feeling it, I took it to another to another level, from 0-100."
