Star Wars: The Force Awakens has broken a number of box office records since opening on Dec. 18 but none so impressive as its Christmas Day performance when it took in $49 million at U.S. theaters. (The previous record was $24 million, set by Sherlock Holmes in 2009).) The film took in $391 million in its first week, breaking the $296 million one-week record set last summer by Jurassic World. Overall totals will surpass $500 million in the U.S. and $1 billion worldwide over the course of the current weekend. The only remaining question is whether Star Wars: The Force Awakens can surpass all-time worldwide box office champs Avatar ($2.6 billion) and Titanic ($2.2 billion).
