Happy decorative gourd season.
Each week, the New Orleans Exercist brings you news and events for active living in the Big Easy. This week: it’s Halloween! Celebrate with the Jazz Half Marathon & 5K and a costumed volleyball tournament. Plus, discovering the sport of “cognitive running,” fitness activities at the All Saints’ Day Saints game and some puns I worked really, really hard on:
- Vino + Vinyasa
is a community yoga class followed by a wine tasting at Longue Vue House and Gardens
(7 Bamboo Road, 504-488-5488; www.longuevue.com
) tomorrow (Oct. 27). Everyone is eligible to win prizes including a bottle of wine, yoga classes and tickets to Longue Vue’s Design Symposium. The suggested donation is $5.
- Still haven’t made it to try out a barre class? Get your low-impact at low risk with Barre3
’s series of free Barre3 in the Tap Room
classes at NOLA Brewing
(3001 Tchoupitoulas St., (504) 301-0117; www.nolabrewing.com
) at 6 p.m. for the next three Tuesdays (Oct. 27, Nov. 3. and Nov. 10). Beer specials will help you cool down after class.
- Smashed Pumpkin, Mid-City Volleyball
’s annual Halloween tournament and costume contest, is on Bayou St. John
at noon Saturday (Oct. 31). Five bucks gets you a spot in the game and free drinks. Team ideas: Gourd-on Ramseys (blood-stained chef coats), Summer Squash (seersucker jackets, squash racquets), Volley of the Dolls (minidresses, candy cigarettes).
- You’ve been diligently lacing up your shoes and fleeing from the zombies
. Halloween is here and it’s time to put your skills to the test: the Jazz Half Marathon & 5K
is Saturday. Late registration
is $40 for the 5K or $100 for the half marathon. Here’s a handy Pintrest board of creative race-day costumes
, including Rosie the Riveter, giant pistachio and human pinata (bonus points if you hand out candy).
- If your costume needs a test run — or if you’ve just realized they don’t make one-week marathon training guides — Happy’s Running Club
is holding a 5K Halloween Costume Run
in the French Quarter on Wednesday (Oct. 28). It costs $10 for non-members and everyone is welcome, “even if you want to be a virtual runner and sit at the bar and cognitively run.”
- If football season has your Sunday runday turning into “cognitive running” on the couch, the Saints have a suggestion: the Oschner Pregame Experience
offers free Zumba sessions, a DJ and an “Ask-the-Doctor” station outside Gate A at the Superdome
. You can also enter to win Saints gear and an Elmwood Fitness Center
membership. Check it out from 9 a.m. to noon before next Sunday's (Nov. 1) game against the Giants.
- Registration for the popular Crescent City Fall Classic
5K race on Nov. 7 ends Friday (Oct. 30). If you’re going to run, send your $30 in
before you head out for Halloween shenanigans.
