A New York couple with different tastes – she has a love for sweets and he leans toward liquid treats – Adilah Brodie and her husband Darryl eventually settled on a business plan that would combine their two loves.

Brodie’s Love, a cupcake boutique and cognac bar, is set to open in late 2015 at 4132 Magazine Street.

“I’ve always wanted to cater and serve to people … and I love cupcakes and he loves cognac, so we just sat down one day and figured it out,” Brodie says.
The couple moved to New Orleans from their home in Harlem in mid-September and signed a lease on the teal house near the corner of Milan Street earlier this year. The 2,100-square-foot space will operate as a retail cupcake shop and as a wine and cognac bar. Several rooms, including two outdoor patios, will serve as seating areas, and a retail display case will greet customers when they enter.

A backyard space may eventually serve as a stage for live music.

“It’s more than just food, it’s about the whole experience,” Brodie says.

It’s not the first time Brodie has taken steps to open a brick and mortar. Five years ago, while living in Charlotte, NC, Brodie says she had to cancel plans to open a shop when she fell “severely ill” with a complication of a rare blood cell disorder. Brodie quit and moved back to New York where she received multiple treatments. Eventually, she started baking again, first at her local church in Harlem, then as a personal chef and in catering services, including weddings and other events.

After marrying in 2013, the couple made plans to relocate to New Orleans, a city Brodie says she visiting while growing up and always wanted to call home.

A preliminary menu of cupcakes includes red velvet, lemon, dark chocolate, a take on bananas Foster, a maple and bacon bits version, and a caramel and sea salt-flavored cupcake. Cognac will be featured in at least one of the confections, including a boozy, Sazerac-inspired version.

In addition to an organic line there will be dairy-free, gluten-free, sugar-free and vegan options.

Brodie’s Love will be open daily, afternoons and evenings beginning in late 2015 or early 2016.
