Each week this summer, the New Orleans Exercist brings you a curated list of opportunities to drink at yoga class. Break out those $200 leggings and make it count! The 24-karat health halo is optional, but suggested.
- Qi Gym
, a new class combining qigong and Brain Gym, begins tomorrow (Sept. 1) at Crescent Lotus Dance Studio
(3143 Calhoun St., 504-382-5199; www.crescentlotus.com
). Brain Gym is a proprietary system of exercises intended to sharpen mental skills like reaction time and concentration. The class is taught by Tayna Simmons of Brain Gym New Orleans
and costs $10 per session.
- Nathalie Croix of Shanti Yoga Shala
teaches Vino and Vinyasa
, a new weekly after-work yoga class and wine happy hour, in the Parish at House of Blues
(225 Decatur St., 504-310-4999; www.houseofblues.com/neworleans
) on Wednesday (Sept. 2). It’s free for Foundation members and $10 for guests. Email firstname.lastname@example.org
- For the next three Thursdays (Sept. 3, 10 and 17), the W French Quarter
(316 Chartres St., 504-581-1200; www.wfrenchquarter.com
) hosts Sweat. Stretch. Swim.
, a free 30-minute workout class followed by a cool-down session and a poolside happy hour. The classes are sponsored by Lululemon
and The Sweat Social
, which offers drop-in group fitness classes aimed at travelers.
- Is your heart a lonely kayak, abandoned on Bayou St. John? Do you feel like you just can’t row on alone? Interested newcomers are welcome at the New Orleans Rowing Club
’s fall-kick off meeting
at Bayou Beer Garden
(326 Jefferson Davis Pkwy., 504-302-9357; www.bayoubeergarden.com
) on Friday (Sept. 4).
- Flashmob New Orleans
begins rehearsals for its annual Thriller Flashmob Experience
on Saturday (Sept. 5). Become a bone-fide Michael Jackson dancing zombie in just eight weeks – because it’s never too early to get excited about Halloween, and because Kajun's is year-round. Classes are $15 each or $100 for the full series.
- The Tom Sawyer Mississippi River Run
takes over Audubon Park (Shelter 10, 6500 Magazine St.) at 8 a.m. Sunday (Sept. 6) with a 2-mile adult run and a “Huck of a Half” (get it?) half-mile kids' run. The post-race party features Reginelli’s and Abita. (Don’t tell me you wouldn’t be eating pizza and beer for breakfast on Labor Day weekend anyway.) Registration
is $20 and proceeds benefit the Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans
- This list could not be complete without another yoga class with an alliterative title. The Renaissance New Orleans Arts Hotel
hosts Asanas in the Art Gallery
on Sunday (Sept. 6), taught by Mark Berger of Higher Power
. Strictly speaking there’s no drinking involved at this event, but the hotel bar is right there
