Out now: New Orleans native PJ Morton's live album and DVD

  • PJ Morton.

New Orleans songwriter, producer and solo artist PJ Morton — also the keyboardist for uber-pop outfit Maroon 5 — released his second live album (and first live DVD) Live Show Killer earlier this month. He returns to the city for a release show at The Howlin' Wolf (907 S. Peters St.) tonight, July 17 at 10 p.m.

The album follows 2013's New Orleans, his first major label studio effort under Young Money and Cash Money, which featured guest appearances from Stevie Wonder, Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes. Live Show Killer, however, is Morton's first outing on his own imprint, Morton Records.

With his ace band, dubbed The Crusade, Morton and company charge through Live Show Killer's tight-knit funk and R&B, pulling from his solo efforts and a few covers (including "Thank You For Being a Friend" from the Golden Girls). The album was recorded at Henson Records Studios Studio A in Los Angeles earlier this year, which proved to be an intimate setting with some lively house party results.
