French Quarter residents now have a shiny new neighborhood bar in their midst with the arrival of The Black Penny (700 N. Rampart).
Located in the former home of The Ninth Circle (a dive bar known for its thumping techno music), The Black Penny space has been completely renovated by project partners Bert West, former manager of Erin Rose, and Bar Tonique owner Ed Diaz.
"We completely gutted the space and spent months working on it. The only thing that we left in tact was the bar," said West. "We exposed the beams and brick, fixed all the plumbing. When people from the neighborhood walk in now, they're excited."
The Black Penny's focus will be on simple cocktails (the menu is still in development) and beers. Currently, the bar has 42 craft beers — all in cans — and is working to reach 50 in the next few weeks.
The interior stone arches, dark wood trim and reclaimed wood all work to give the bar an almost castle-like feel. "We want it to be a casual place for the neighborhood," said West.
