While New Orleans is best known for its gumbo heritage, gumbo's underdog cousin, chili, is poised to gain some attention this March at the second annual "Chili in the Channel" cookoff on March 7.
A fundraiser to benefit ReNew Schools, the event's second year promises to be packed with even spicier, meatier competition than the last, which brought out 15 restaurants (many from the Irish Channel) and amateurs to compete for the coveted "golden pot" trophy.
This year, 20 professional and amateur teams will go head-to-head for chili glory, and registration is currently underway. Interested in showing off your chili chops? Each team should have no more than six participants, and will receive a stipend for purchasing ingredients at nearby BreauxMart. Teams can sign up by e-mailing Scott Satchfield.
All proceeds from the event will go to benefit the schools. For more information and an ever-building list of participants and entertainment, follow along via Facebook.
