Lakeview residents in search of a new place for casual, sandwich-focused dining and outdoor relaxing might just have a new favorite hangout with the arrival of The Backyard next month.
Located in a former bank building at 244 W. Harrison Ave., owner Jason Tournillon (who spent 8 years working as part of The Chimes empire in Baton Rouge) wants The Backyard to be the kind of restaurant that provides, "a comfortable, familiar space to enjoy great food and drinks...with family and friends" while catering both to adults and children.
Basically, the restaurant wants to be your chilled out, backyard-away-from-home.
While the menus are still in development, sandwiches (but no po-boys) will be a primary focus, with smoked meats, tater tots and "a la carte" style counter service, keeping the restaurant's atmosphere purposely relaxed.
One of the most interesting elements of the new restaurant is a one-of-a-kind (perhaps, first-of-its-kind) Louisiana-crafted cast iron cooktop for hamburgers. A full assortment of beer and liquor will be available, but craft cocktails will not be a focus. ("We can make anything you need, but we don't want to make it complicated," said Tournillon.)
A separate menu for kids (featuring a sloppy joe made from the smoked meats) will cater to a younger set, as will the expansive, well-shaded backyard.
A tentative opening is set for sometime next month with menu prices hovering between $8.50 and $11.
