Three members of the Southern Eagle Sales and Service's craft beer distribution team went to upstate New York to brew a beer with Southern Tier Brewing, and that beer has been released exclusively in New Orleans this week.

Kyle Huling, Travis Clark, and Donn Lacoste of LA Craft, the craft beer department at Southern Eagle, collaborated with Southern Tier's Director of Research & Development, Joe Reynolds, to create Southern Tier 30°/90°, which is an American Cream Ale style brewed with lavender. The 30/90 name references the respective latitudes of New Orleans and Lakewood, New York.

According to Reynolds, the three Louisianians made it to the brewery in mid-December just in time for an unexpected brew day blizzard. "BAM! SNOW! Welcome to New York!"

Regarding the beer, Reynolds says, "30°/90° is a lighter beer, both in color and body. The body is lightened by the subtle use of flaked maize, an adjunct commonly used in American cream ales. It adds fermentable sugars without too much else. Judicious use of crystal malts and oats prevent  this beer from being watery or thin. The aromatic synergy of lavender and whole leaf Mosaic is crazy. It fires on all cylinders. Floral, spicy, herbal, berry, fruity, citrus, tea, woody! And just because we are Southern Tier, we dry hopped it with the experimental hop variety 07270, which added a dose of dank, resinous hop aroma."

The beer is available throughout New Orleans, at the Bulldog Uptown, the Bulldog MidCity, Lagers International Ale House, Avenue Pub, Fat Harry's, Ale on Oak, World of Beer, Bayou Beer Garden, and Mid City Yacht Club.

Ale on Oak (8118 Oak St., 504-324-6558) will be holding a rollout event on Sunday, January 18, at 2 p.m. 30°/90° will be on tap, along with a pint glass giveaway, which can be enjoyed by watching the NFL playoff games.
