The final numbers are in and box office revenues for movies shown in the U.S. and Canada during 2014 dropped 5.2% from 2013's total to $10.3 billion. Hollywood observers blame everything from social media to video on demand for the decline, but hopes are high for 2015 based on the long-awaited reboot of the Star Wars franchise with Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams and due out in December.

The year's top-grossing movie was Guardians of the Galaxy ($333 million), followed by The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 ($309 million), Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($260 million), The Lego Movie ($258 million), and Transformers: Age of Extinction ($245 million).
